OSDEL

The Greek Collecting Society for Literary Works (OSDEL) is a non‑profit civil cooperative society, licensed by the Ministry of Culture and Sports (in accordance with the provisions of Law 2121/1993, as currently in force, pertaining to the protection of copyright). It is owned and governed by its members, who are writers and publishers.

Its purpose is the collective management and protection of copyright and the related rights of creators of literary works, as well as their licensees, and likewise of the publishers of literary works and their licensees. These are rights that, for legal or practical reasons, cannot be managed individually by the creators and publishers who hold them.

The most important of these rights are:

a) The right to fair remuneration, which ensures lawful compensation of the rightholders (creators and publishers) for the reproduction of their works by private individuals for their personal use.

More specifically, fair remuneration is calculated as a legally determined percentage of the value of reprographic devices and photocopy‑suitable paper used by private individuals at home or in the workplace to reproduce literary works (through photocopying, copying, printing or digital reproduction). It is collected from the importers of such reprographic devices (photocopiers, printers, computers, mobile phones and tablets) and the corresponding paper.

b) The right of reproduction and digital use of excerpts from books, newspapers or periodicals by educational institutions, press clipping companies and businesses, which ensures lawful access to and use of the works of rightholders (creators and publishers), as well as their compensation for such use.

c) The right to fair remuneration for the public lending of books, which, as provided for by Law 4481/2017, ensures the compensation of the rightholders (creators and publishers) for the free public use of their works in libraries.
