Education Licensing

OSDEL’s objective is to serve educational institutions and organisations by providing lawful licences for the use of literary and visual works, whether in analogue or digital form.

To this end, two licensing schemes are offered, which cover the needs for supplementary educational material:

– Licensing per page. This pertains to educational institutions that offer distance-learning courses, as well as educational institutions that supply specific educational material to their students. This specific licence requires the educational institution to specify the number of pages to be used by students, the number of students that will have access to the specific pages, as well as the bibliographic reference information of the works in question. The final cost is calculated on the basis of the number of pages reproduced, the number of users who have access to the material, and the rate per page.

– General licensing This is a broader type of licence, which covers reproduction that the educational institution cannot specify, such as reproduction on a shared photocopier in a library. For this type of licence, it is sufficient to specify the total number of students. The final cost is calculated on the basis of a yearly amount per student.

The reprographic means permitted under both schemes are the following:

ANALOGUE (Photocopies): Reproduction on paper using photocopiers and distribution of photocopies to users.

DIGITAL: Reproduction in an electronic file and storage of the file in a closed network, which students and teaching staff have exclusive access to through the use of personal login credentials.

The licenses granted by OSDEL are subject to the following general restrictions:

– up to 15% of the pages of any book

– one individual magazine article

– one visual artwork, including photographs
